Pioneering Initiatives

Pioneering Initiatives are communities of practice, grassroots-based initiatives, individuals, regional learning communities and movements all working to create healthy and resilient communities. Participants are developing the capacity to solve their most pressing problems—such as community health, ecological sustainability and economic self-reliance—by drawing on the wisdom and wealth already present in their people, traditions and environment.

The Berkana Institute serves people globally who are giving birth to the new forms, processes and leadership that will restore hope to the future. Since 1992, Berkana has gradually expanded its work to reach pioneering leaders and communities in all types of organizations and in dozens of nations. We know that the leaders we need are emerging everywhere, among thousands of people who are stepping forward to create a future of possibility and hope. We are experimenting in being a self-organizing system that can support their pioneering efforts.

The communities of practice that are pioneering new ways of creating change in our communities can be read about in the side menu. Examples include Swaraj University in India, the Southern Africa Learning Collaborative, Powers of Place, the Upcycling Portal, the Women’s Leadership Initiative and the North America Feeding Ourselves Sustainably Community of Practice.
