In September and October of 2007, The Berkana Exchange and a group of leaders and learners spent ten days southern Mexico, meeting and learning from pioneering leaders who are creating extraordinary change in their communities. Participants traveled to two of Mexico’s most unique regions, Oaxaca and Chiapas. Known for the vibrancy of their indigenous cultures, these southern states informed our exploration of the tensions between ancient wisdom and the modern world. Our experience was shaped by CEDI/Unitierra, a leadership learning center focused on reclaiming the freedom to learn and reconnect to traditional culture. With guidance from Unitierra Co-founder Sergio Beltrán and The Berkana Institute Co- President Deborah Frieze, we explored local forms of leadership that are working well, and that offer us new possibilities for making a difference in our own lives. |
