Kufunda, Zimbabwe
Kufunda is a learning center and model village whose purpose is to inspire the co-creation of strong, life-affirming communities in Zimbabwe and beyond by sharing the wisdom, practices and social systems that keep our communities healthy, vibrant and largely self-reliant.

With the current political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe, the increase in poverty is dramatic. Inflation now soars beyond a billion percent, and most people in the country cannot afford or even find the most basic food items. In spite of the collapse of Zimbabwe’s food, education, health, currency and government systems, Kufunda is stepping forward to create resilient lives and livelihoods among its community members.

Activities and Accomplishments

Kufunda is working with five rural communities to develop the foundation for initiatives that will strengthen and nourish a community. This includes the following projects:
  • Permaculture: rainwater harvesting, organic farming and gardening, soil improvement, companion planting

  • Living Positively With HIV/AIDS: testing, counseling, home-based care

  • Herbs and Nutrition: growing and using medicinal herbs

  • Ecological Sanitation: building compost toilets to prevent disease

  • Community Currency: launching the “Kufunda Hour,” an alternative currency system

  • Sustainability Projects: solar cookers, beekeeping, mushroom farming, tree nursery, preschool
