Participants in the Berkana Exchange share a commitment to strengthening their community’s leadership capacity and self-reliance by working with the wisdom and wealth already present in their people, traditions and environment. We have found these friends in Brazil, Canada, Greece, India, Mexico, Pakistan, South Africa, the U.S. and Zimbabwe. We know they are everywhere.
Some of the organizations in the Berkana Exchange are urban; others are rural. Some are based in the North; others in the South. Some have been around for more than 20 years; others were launched only a few years ago. Our differences our vast. But what hold us together as a learning community are our shared values and beliefs about how change happens. We all are working to create the future we wish for. We all are practicing and experimenting and innovating new ways of creating healthy and resilient communities.
Some of the values and beliefs we hold most dear include:
• The leaders we need are already here. • Start anywhere, follow it everywhere. • We have what we need. • We make our path by walking it. • We turn to one another.
