Axladitsa-Avatakia, Greece
Axladitsa-Avatakia, which means “little pear and trees that grow in a difficult place,” is a 24-acre organic olive and fruit farm that serves as both a home and a place of learning and inquiry. Axladitsa-Avatakia provides opportunities for people of all ages and from all parts of the world to learn, explore, create and develop sustainable environmental, social and economic practices.

Activities and Accomplishments

Since 2006, when Axladitsa was created, founders Maria Scordialou and Sarah Whiteley have been working to convert the fallow orchards into a sustainable, organic olive farm. They have cleared land to cultivate an organic garden. They are experimenting with alternative technologies such as solar power and dry toilets. Axladitsa-Avatakia offers opportunities for individual and collective inquiry in the form of workshops, gatherings, independent sabbaticals, and internships on the land. Programs include:
  • The Conscious Kitchen: Experimentation and inquiry around wholesome and sustainable living through the window of our kitchens. How do we grow, purchase, prepare, compost and serve our food with consciousness, passion and in alignment with natural cycles?

  • Olive Harvesting: An opportunity to learn about and participate in the traditional art form of olive harvesting, and through this physical practice of harvesting, uncovering what is emerging within ourselves.

  • The Art of Protection: A gathering which seeks to engage in questions around vulnerability, risk, protection, conquering aggression and power using such diverse frameworks as living systems, Aikido, Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, Buddhist approaches to conflict and aggression, and psychoanalytic understandings of boundary and protection.
