Located in the village of Carleton, Nova Scotia, Split Rock Learning Center is housed at the Shire, a non-traditional venue and conference centre on 165 acres of beautiful land in Yarmouth County. Split Rock offers a wide range of local and international programs that support community building, youth leadership and rural livelihood. It is a place for people to learn self-reliance and become equipped in community leadership through residential and non-residential programs. The Shire’s purpose is to support people gaining clarity to make positive life choices.
Activities and Accomplishments
Split Rock recently collaborated with local community members and government agencies to open a youth center in the nearby town of Yarmouth. The learning center takes an unconventional approach to youth work, espousing the idea that rather than being the problem in a community, young people are an incredible force for positive social change. Split Rock’s programs involve training in a wide variety of areas, each of which is a doorway for people to build meaningful relationships to the land, themselves and others. Areas of focus include:
• Youth leadership • Community development • Entrepreneurship • Trade skills • Sustainable landscaping and gardening • Personal growth
